WINDHOEK — Namibia’s Parliament is strengthening oversight of the country’s natural resources after its Standing Committee on Natural Resources conducted a programme in the //Kharas Region from July 13 to 15, 2026.
The parliamentary exercise focused on the responsible management, sustainable utilisation and equitable beneficiation of natural resources, placing resource governance firmly on the national political agenda.
Parliamentary oversight is aimed at ensuring that Namibia’s natural wealth is managed responsibly while delivering meaningful economic benefits to the country and its communities. The //Kharas Region is strategically important because of its mineral and other natural-resource potential.
The committee’s work comes as Namibia seeks to strengthen domestic value addition and ensure that resource development contributes more broadly to economic development, employment and local participation.
Political and economic observers say stronger parliamentary oversight can improve accountability around major resource projects and help ensure that development decisions are aligned with national interests.
The issue is particularly significant as Namibia expands its ambitions in minerals, energy and other strategic industries that could attract substantial domestic and international investment.
The latest parliamentary initiative highlights growing political attention on how Namibia manages its natural resources and how effectively resource wealth can be converted into wider national development.
