WINDHOEK — Namibia’s mining sector is generating new opportunities for domestic companies after the Tumas Uranium Project awarded N$392.6 million in construction contracts to two 100% Namibian-owned firms.
Namibia Construction and Nexus Building and Civils Contractors have received contracts covering civil and concrete works for the Tumas processing facilities. Mobilisation is scheduled for August as the project moves toward its anticipated final investment decision later this year.
The contracts are expected to support roughly 500 local jobs, with each contractor planning to deploy about 250 workers at the project site. The construction activity is also expected to create additional opportunities for local suppliers and supporting businesses.
The Tumas development is part of Namibia’s expanding uranium industry, which remains an important contributor to exports and investment.
Business analysts say awarding major contracts to local companies can strengthen domestic enterprise development, skills transfer and economic participation while keeping more project spending within Namibia.
The project could also generate additional procurement opportunities as construction progresses and further development phases come online.
The N$393 million award highlights the growing role of Namibian-owned businesses in major mining projects and could provide a significant boost to local employment and industrial capacity.
