Mozambique is reinforcing security measures in Niassa Province following the recent terrorist attack in Marrupa district, as authorities work to protect local communities and respond to reports of people being held by the attackers.
The Defence Ministry said security forces are continuing operations aimed at locating and neutralising the groups responsible, while maintaining state presence and protecting civilians in the affected areas. Defence Ministry spokesperson Omar Saranga said the groups are using their mobility to operate in remote and sparsely populated areas.
The latest reports also indicate that at least 10 people, including seven children and three adults, are reportedly being held for ransom following the September 3 attack on the Marangira hunting area. Authorities have cautioned that information about the reported hostages remains limited.
The original attack killed at least one person, damaged local infrastructure and caused thousands of residents to leave their homes. Earlier reporting also documented the abduction of workers and security operations in the area.
The government says protecting civilians and restoring security remain the immediate priorities as operations continue in Niassa.
