82 Malian Soldiers Freed After Armed-Group Captivity
BAMAKO, Mali — Mali’s armed forces have announced that 82 soldiers captured by armed groups have been released, including some troops who had been held since a major attack in April.
The soldiers were reportedly captured during coordinated attacks on military and strategic locations on April 25, 2026. The releases were confirmed by the Malian military and the Azawad Liberation Front, with the separatist group describing the move as a humanitarian gesture.
The release is a significant development for Mali’s security situation, which has deteriorated as separatist forces and al-Qaeda-linked militants have increased pressure on government positions in the north and other parts of the country.
Reports indicate that around 118 government soldiers remain in captivity, meaning the latest release does not end the wider hostage crisis.
The development comes as Mali continues to face attacks from both jihadist groups and Tuareg-led separatists, placing additional pressure on the military government to improve security across the country.
