Mali Prepares for 15th Bamako Encounters Photography Biennale

BAMAKO, Mali — Mali is preparing to welcome artists and photography professionals for the 15th edition of Bamako Encounters, one of Africa’s most important platforms for contemporary photography.

The biennale is scheduled to return to Bamako in late 2026, placing African visual artists and photographers at the centre of an international cultural program. The event has long provided a platform for contemporary African photography and visual storytelling. 

The return of the photography biennale could give Mali’s arts sector a major international boost, while providing emerging photographers with opportunities to present their work to curators, cultural institutions and audiences.

Bamako Encounters also strengthens the capital’s reputation as an important centre for African photography. The biennale has historically connected artists from across Africa and the diaspora while encouraging debate around contemporary African identity and visual culture.

For Mali’s creative sector, the 2026 edition offers an opportunity to showcase local artistic talent and reinforce Bamako’s position on the international photography calendar.
