Mali Celebrates 600 Years of Timbuktu’s Sankoré Mosque
TIMBUKTU, Mali — One of Mali’s most important cultural landmarks has taken centre stage as Timbuktu celebrates the 600th anniversary of the historic Sankoré Mosque.
The anniversary activities included conferences, traditional replastering of the mosque and the presentation of new sound equipment. The celebrations brought together cultural officials, heritage specialists and members of the Timbuktu community.
Sankoré Mosque is closely associated with Timbuktu’s centuries-old intellectual tradition, having served as one of the city's historic centres of Islamic scholarship and education. The monument forms part of Timbuktu’s UNESCO-listed cultural heritage.
The anniversary is also drawing attention to the challenges facing Timbuktu’s historic buildings. Sand encroachment, water erosion and harsh weather conditions continue to threaten the authenticity and integrity of the city’s heritage sites, according to Mali’s cultural authorities.
The 600-year commemoration therefore goes beyond celebration, providing an opportunity to promote heritage preservation, cultural education and the transmission of Mali’s history to younger generations.
