BAMAKO, Mali — Mali and Egypt are exploring expanded cooperation in artificial intelligence, 5G telecommunications, fibre-optic infrastructure and digital public services, opening a new technology-focused chapter in bilateral relations.

The discussions took place during a working visit to Cairo by Mali’s Minister of Communication, Digital Economy and Administrative Modernisation, Alhamdou Ag Ilyène, from September 24 to 30.

Officials discussed training and knowledge exchange in fibre-optic technologies, artificial intelligence and telecommunications, including Egypt’s experience with fifth-generation mobile networks.

Digitalisation of government services was another priority, with the two sides examining ways to share expertise on digital platforms and connectivity for public institutions.

The proposed cooperation also covers the audiovisual technology sector, including training for personnel responsible for operating, maintaining and managing digital broadcasting equipment.

The two countries agreed to continue technical consultations, study visits and exchanges of best practices before potentially negotiating formal cooperation agreements for selected projects.

For Mali, the discussions come as authorities pursue wider digital transformation and infrastructure development, with AI and connectivity becoming increasingly important areas of national technology policy.
