Lesotho’s health sector is facing fresh scrutiny after the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) halted proceedings involving Queen ’Mamohato Memorial Hospital (QMMH) on September 21.

The committee was expecting reports from the Lesotho Medical Council and Nursing Council concerning employees allegedly practising without the required qualifications or documentation.

PAC chairperson Machabana Lemphane Letsie said the committee needed a report on the qualifications of a QMMH doctor heading one of the hospital’s departments, as well as 36 other doctors reportedly without submitted retention certificates. The proceedings were suspended to allow the relevant bodies to prepare the requested reports.

The committee also visited QMMH to follow up on M4 million that the hospital's financial manager was expected to deposit into its Nedbank account.

The reports were expected to be presented to the committee later on Monday, according to the Lesotho News Agency.

The development puts renewed attention on professional registration, regulatory oversight and financial accountability within one of Lesotho’s major hospitals.
