Lesotho is stepping up efforts to modernise government services through digital technology, with the Ministry of Information, Communications, Science, Technology and Innovation working with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on a Whole-of-Government Digital Readiness Assessment.

The assessment is examining the digital systems, technical capabilities and institutional arrangements across government to determine how prepared ministries are to expand digital public services.

Officials and stakeholders recently met in Maseru to discuss the assessment, which has been underway for several months. The initiative is designed to identify areas where government institutions may need stronger technology, skills, investment and coordination.

The government adopted its Whole-of-Government digital transformation framework in 2024. The current assessment is intended to provide a clearer picture of the practical requirements for implementing that framework across ministries.

ICT teams are expected to provide technical support while individual ministries remain responsible for identifying how digital tools can improve their own services.

The development comes as Lesotho expands its wider digital agenda, including national policies covering artificial intelligence, data management and broadband infrastructure.

The assessment could therefore become an important step in shaping how Lesotho delivers coordinated digital government services to citizens.
