Guinea Seeks Return of Almamy Bokar Biro Barry’s Remains From France

CONAKRY, Guinea — Guinea has formally asked France to return the remains of Almamy Bokar Biro Barry, a major historical figure associated with resistance to French colonial conquest in the Fouta-Djalon.

The request was formally submitted on July 27, 2026, and announced publicly by Guinea’s Minister of Culture, Tourism and Handicrafts, Moussa Moïse Sylla, on August 6. French authorities have confirmed that the remains are located at Paris’s Musée de l’Homme.

The initiative has renewed attention on Guinea’s cultural heritage and historical memory, with authorities seeking to reconnect important national figures and objects with the country's contemporary cultural identity.

The request does not mean that the remains have already been returned. Discussions and the necessary procedures will determine the next stage of the process.

The case could become an important reference point for Guinea’s broader efforts to preserve historical heritage and strengthen public awareness of the country's pre-colonial history.
