Alternative 2028 has adopted a cautious position on the National Dialogue announced by Democratic Republic of Congo President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi, saying it will wait for an official presidential order before deciding whether to participate.
The political group led by Ados Ndombasi said it is not prepared at this stage to either fully endorse or reject the proposed dialogue. Instead, the party wants further clarification on how the process will be organized and what guarantees will accompany it.
Alternative 2028 also considers the political de-escalation measures announced by the president to be an important factor in determining whether the dialogue can take place in a credible and constructive environment.
Party Seeks Clarity on Dialogue Framework
The opposition group said a national dialogue could provide an opportunity to seek peaceful solutions to the political and security challenges facing the country. It believes an inclusive process could help strengthen national cohesion, support peace efforts and identify longer-term solutions to the country's crises.
However, the party wants clarification on several key issues, including the legal basis for the dialogue, the criteria for political and social representation, the responsibilities and independence of facilitators, the proposed timetable and mechanisms for implementing any agreements reached.
Alternative 2028 has also raised concerns about plans for extensive consultations across all 26 provinces before a national conference in Kinshasa. While supporting broad participation, the party believes a more streamlined process could be better suited to the urgency of the country's situation.
Political De-escalation Remains a Key Condition
The political climate is another major concern for Alternative 2028. The party says concrete and effective de-escalation measures are necessary to build trust among political actors and create conditions for meaningful participation.
The group will therefore wait for further official announcements and actions from the presidency before reaching a final decision.
Position Differs From C64
Alternative 2028's position differs from that of the Article 64 Coalition (C64), of which it is a member. The opposition platform has already rejected the consultations announced by Tshisekedi and called instead for an inclusive national dialogue.
The C64 has also opposed constitutional changes and the possibility of a third presidential term for Tshisekedi. The coalition is continuing to mobilize supporters ahead of a national march announced for September 15, 2026.
For now, Alternative 2028 is maintaining a more cautious approach, choosing to await formal presidential measures and further details before determining its participation in the National Dialogue.
