Cameroon has signed a €212.35 million financing agreement, equivalent to approximately CFA139.2 billion, with the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) to support rehabilitation of the Douala–Bafoussam highway.
The agreement was signed on October 13, 2026, in Bangkok, Thailand, by Cameroon’s Minister of Economy, Planning and Regional Development, Alamine Ousmane Mey, and IsDB President Dr. Muhammad Sulaiman Al Jasser during the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank Group.
The road project is expected to support improvements to a major transport connection linking Douala, Cameroon’s principal commercial hub and seaport, with Bafoussam, an important economic centre in the western region.
Better road infrastructure could help businesses move goods more efficiently, improve connections between producers and markets, and strengthen transport links for traders and logistics operators. Construction and rehabilitation activity may also create opportunities for contractors and related service providers, although the scale of those benefits will depend on implementation.
The financing agreement represents another step in Cameroon’s efforts to modernise transport infrastructure. Businesses and road users will be watching for details on the project’s implementation schedule, construction arrangements and expected completion date.
The agreement establishes a financing commitment for the project; it does not, by itself, mean that rehabilitation work has been completed or that travel costs have already fallen.
