GITEGA, Burundi — Burundi has hosted the opening of the 5th Continental Dialogue on Youth, Peace and Security, placing youth participation and inclusive governance at the centre of a major African political discussion.

President Évariste Ndayishimiye, who is also serving as African Union chairperson and the AU champion for the Youth, Peace and Security agenda, officially opened the meeting in Kiriri on August 10.

This year's dialogue brings together the Youth, Peace and Security and Women, Peace and Security agendas, with discussions focusing on water resources, conflict prevention, crisis management and responsible governance.

The initiative gives Burundi an opportunity to strengthen its diplomatic profile within the African Union while promoting greater participation by young people and women in political and peacebuilding processes.

Burundi is using the continental dialogue to push for a stronger role for youth and women in preventing conflicts and shaping Africa's political future.

The discussions come as Burundi also prepares for its 2027 electoral process, with the presidency recently bringing stakeholders together to discuss preparations for the election.
