Burkina Faso’s Council of Ministers has adopted two decrees recognising 315 people as Martyrs of the Nation and 10 as Invalids of the Nation, according to an official government summary released on 24 September 2026.
The decisions were made under the country’s law of 10 June 2022, which establishes the status of national martyrs and invalids. Government spokesperson Pingdwendé Gilbert Ouédraogo said the measures honour people who showed bravery or made sacrifices during recent political, social and security-related events.
Under the announced provisions, recognised invalids are eligible for benefits that include free public transport and healthcare, psychosocial support, and assistance for their minor children. Families of those recognised as martyrs may receive psychosocial support, transport and burial assistance, and care for minor children as wards of the nation.
The government said the decrees are intended to provide ongoing support to affected families and dependants. The summary did not publish the names of those recognised.
