LUANDA — Angola is dealing with a major telecommunications disruption after Unitel confirmed that its technology infrastructure was hit by a cyberattack in the early hours of July 28.
According to the operator, the incident was detected at about 2:20 a.m. and affected voice services, mobile data, and internet access across the country. Unitel immediately activated its response and containment procedures and deployed technical and cybersecurity teams to limit the impact.
Unitel said services remained affected while specialists worked to stabilise the network and restore full operations. The company has promised to provide further information through its official communication channels as recovery efforts continue.
The disruption has affected both individual and business users, with reports of difficulties making calls and accessing internet-dependent services. The incident also drew particular attention because it occurred around the time of Unitel's landmark debut on Angola's stock exchange.
Cybersecurity specialists say the incident highlights the growing importance of protecting telecommunications infrastructure as mobile connectivity becomes increasingly critical to banking, commerce, transport, and everyday communication.
The Unitel attack has become one of Angola's most significant recent digital infrastructure incidents, putting national telecommunications resilience and cybersecurity firmly in the spotlight.
