ALGIERS — Algeria has established a national monitoring and support cell to track the evolution of forest and crop fires and coordinate emergency-response efforts across affected provinces.

The cell was created at the level of the Prime Minister’s services following instructions from President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, according to an official government statement.

The move comes after Civil Protection units extinguished 142 of 195 fires recorded over a 24-hour period across several wilayas, while significant resources were mobilized to fight continuing blazes.

Authorities are coordinating firefighting, evacuation, relief, and damage-assessment operations as the country responds to the latest fire emergency. Officials have also pledged support for citizens affected by the fires, including assistance and compensation measures where appropriate.

The national coordination mechanism is expected to improve information-sharing between government agencies and help authorities respond more quickly to new outbreaks.

The latest emergency measures highlight Algeria’s growing focus on coordinated wildfire management as extreme heat and dry conditions increase seasonal fire risks.
