Botswana’s Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) is preparing for a National Council meeting and Special Congress as the party faces an internal dispute over its constitution.

The party’s Central Committee is expected to convene the meetings, with the Special Congress agenda focused on constitutional matters. The development comes as the BDP works through internal disagreements following its transition into opposition after the 2024 general election.

The political developments have also coincided with legal proceedings involving BDP president Mpho Balopi, who faces seven counts of fraud and money laundering alongside seven co-accused. The charges are matters before the courts, and the proceedings remain ongoing.

The upcoming party meetings are therefore expected to draw attention to BDP leadership, party structures and constitutional procedures as Botswana’s opposition politics continue to evolve.
