LUANDA — Angola’s government has rejected a political pact proposed by opposition leader Adalberto Costa Júnior after his meeting with President João Lourenço.

The proposed pact called for measures including a new Constitution, political reform legislation, and other initiatives aimed at strengthening stability and national reconciliation.

The Executive said it sees no objective political or institutional reason to approve the proposed pact, arguing that national issues should be addressed through Angola’s existing constitutional and legal framework.

The government also said UNITA has the right to submit legislative initiatives through its parliamentary group in the National Assembly. UNITA, meanwhile, has argued that Angola needs a stronger political environment, deeper democratic reforms, and greater confidence in future electoral processes.

The disagreement has placed constitutional reform, electoral credibility, institutional independence, and political stability at the centre of renewed national debate.

The dispute highlights the continuing political divide between Angola’s government and its main opposition as the country debates the future of its democratic institutions and political system.
