Angola and Tanzania have signed four cooperation agreements aimed at strengthening economic relations, improving transport connections and creating new opportunities for trade and investment across Africa.
The agreements were signed on October 29, 2026, during Angolan President João Lourenço's state visit to Tanzania, which concluded on October 30.
The agreements cover bilateral air services, information and communications technology, meteorology and the transfer of sentenced persons. Both governments also indicated that they are negotiating additional cooperation arrangements, including possible collaboration in satellite technology.
One of the biggest economic opportunities involves connecting Angola's Atlantic coastline with Tanzania's Indian Ocean transport network. The proposed railway link would connect the Benguela Railway and Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) network through Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
If implemented, the connection could improve regional cargo transportation, support mineral exports and give businesses additional routes to international markets.
Energy cooperation is another important part of the discussions. Tanzania's Petroleum Development Corporation is assessing the possibility of participating in Angola's planned Lobito oil refinery project. However, no final investment commitment has been announced.
The two countries also discussed mining cooperation, skills development and opportunities to encourage companies to invest in each other's markets.
The agreements could strengthen Angola's position as a regional trade and logistics hub, while opening new commercial opportunities between Southern and East Africa.
