A magnitude 2.8 earthquake was recorded near Fez in northern Morocco early Tuesday morning, October 27, according to the country’s National Institute of Geophysics.

The tremor struck the Ain Chkef area in Moulay Yacoub province, within the Fez-Meknes region, at approximately 6:30 a.m. local time. Officials described the event as normal seismic activity in an area where similar tremors have been recorded previously.

According to a report by Hespress, an official from the institute said the agency had received no reports from residents or local authorities about the tremor, suggesting that it was not widely felt.

A separate seismic monitoring application estimated the earthquake at magnitude 3.1 and placed its depth at approximately seven kilometres. The official institute’s reported magnitude was 2.8.

The event comes as Morocco continues to monitor seismic activity in its northern regions following the devastating Al Haouz earthquake of September 2023. Experts have previously documented recurring tremors across parts of the country.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries associated with this latest tremor. Authorities continue to rely on seismic monitoring to assess activity and provide information to the public.
