ASMARA, Eritrea — Sudan’s army chief and Sovereign Council Chairman Abdel Fattah al-Burhan arrived in Asmara on September 4 for a new round of discussions with Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki.

The visit was described by Sudan’s Sovereign Council as a “fraternal” visit focused on bilateral discussions. It marked Burhan’s second trip to Eritrea in less than two months, following an earlier visit on July 17.

The latest meeting comes as Sudan remains locked in a devastating conflict and regional governments continue to assess its security and humanitarian consequences.

Burhan’s repeated visits underline the importance of Eritrea in Sudan’s regional diplomatic calculations.

For Asmara, engagement with Sudan provides an opportunity to reinforce bilateral relations and discuss developments affecting the wider Red Sea and Horn of Africa region.

The talks are also being watched for indications of how Eritrea and Sudan could coordinate on regional security, political developments and bilateral cooperation.

Although details of the discussions have not been fully disclosed, the renewed high-level contact places Asmara at the centre of another important regional diplomatic engagement.
