Zimbabwe is investigating a deadly outbreak of violence at Chenxi Mine Site Four in Shurugwi, where one person has died, three others were injured and five excavators were set on fire.
The incident occurred during the night of November 2 in the Wanderer mining area. The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed that investigations into the public violence were underway.
Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said authorities were investigating the incident and would provide further information as inquiries progressed.
Reports indicate that the confrontation involved artisanal miners and security personnel, amid tensions surrounding access to gold-mining claims. However, police have not publicly established who was responsible for the violence or disclosed the identities of those killed and injured.
The destruction of five excavators represents a significant disruption to mining operations and raises fresh concerns about security, community relations and disputes over mineral-rich land.
The incident has renewed attention on mining-related tensions in Shurugwi, an area where competition over access to gold resources has previously generated disputes.
Authorities are expected to release further details as investigations continue. The circumstances surrounding the fatal confrontation remain under investigation.
