MAPUTO, Mozambique — Mozambique has intensified efforts to assist and repatriate citizens affected by a recent wave of anti-immigrant violence in South Africa, following reports that several Mozambican nationals were killed during the unrest.
According to Mozambican authorities, hundreds of citizens have already returned home after violence erupted in parts of South Africa, particularly in the Western Cape region. Government officials confirmed that diplomatic and humanitarian measures are underway to support affected families and facilitate the safe return of displaced citizens.
The incidents have raised concerns across Southern Africa, with regional leaders closely monitoring the situation. Mozambican authorities are coordinating with South African counterparts to investigate the attacks, assist victims, and strengthen protections for migrant communities.
Officials have also completed the repatriation of several victims' remains while continuing efforts to reintegrate returning citizens into local communities. The government has emphasized the importance of regional cooperation to prevent future outbreaks of xenophobic violence and maintain stability across the region.
The developing situation remains a major regional concern as migration, employment pressures, and security challenges continue to influence cross-border relations in Southern Africa.
