Morocco’s diplomatic agenda moved into focus at the United Nations after Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita met Secretary-General António Guterres at UN headquarters in New York on September 16.

According to the UN, the two officials discussed peace and security issues in Africa and the situation in the Middle East. Guterres also expressed appreciation for Morocco’s contribution to United Nations peacekeeping operations. 

The meeting comes ahead of a significant period for Morocco’s diplomacy, with the UN Security Council expected to address the Western Sahara issue later in the year. The current mandate of the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) is scheduled to expire on October 31, 2026. 

Bourita also conveyed King Mohammed VI’s greetings to the UN chief and highlighted the cooperation between Morocco and the United Nations during Guterres’ tenure.

The meeting places Morocco’s multilateral diplomacy, regional security and the upcoming UN discussions at the centre of the country’s current international political agenda.
