Mauritania Seeks Fresh Mining Investment as Gold Boom Gains Momentum
NOUAKCHOTT, Mauritania — Mauritania is positioning its mining sector to attract fresh international investment as soaring gold prices reshape the resource market across West Africa.
Gold demand reached a record 1,231 tonnes in the first quarter of 2026, representing a market worth about $193 billion, according to a recent Africanews report. The surge is encouraging mining companies to reassess opportunities across the region.
Mauritania is among the countries seeking to benefit from the renewed investor interest in mining. The country has significant mineral resources and is increasingly looking to attract capital into projects that can expand production and generate wider economic benefits.
Investors are now examining more than the quality of mineral deposits, with regulatory stability, taxation, infrastructure and government policy becoming increasingly important factors when choosing new mining destinations.
For Mauritania, stronger investment could help expand mining activity, create jobs and increase government revenues while supporting infrastructure development.
The challenge for Nouakchott will be turning rising international interest in its mineral wealth into sustainable investment, local employment and broader economic development.
