MASERU — Lesotho is advancing one of its most ambitious investment projects after the government announced a proposed US$6.2 billion Kobong hydropower and artificial-intelligence data-centre development.
The project combines renewable electricity generation with large-scale AI computing infrastructure, creating a new link between energy development, technology investment and economic transformation.
The investment could create new employment opportunities while supporting skills development and local business participation. Construction, engineering, energy services, technology infrastructure and supporting industries could benefit as the project progresses.
The development also has potential strategic importance for Lesotho’s energy security. Expanding domestic generation capacity could strengthen the country’s electricity supply while creating additional economic value from its natural water resources.
Technology infrastructure could provide another growth opportunity by positioning Lesotho to participate in the expanding African digital economy and demand for AI computing capacity.
Economic analysts say the scale of the proposed investment could attract additional investors if implementation progresses successfully and local companies are integrated into supply chains.
The Kobong project represents a potentially significant shift in Lesotho’s economic strategy, combining renewable energy, digital infrastructure and investment-led development in a single major project.
