ABUJA, Nigeria — The Federal Government has officially launched the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System, introducing a new digital addressing infrastructure covering addressable buildings across Nigeria.
The system, launched through the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), uses Geographic Information System technology to assign each addressable building a unique 11-character alphanumeric postcode linked to its precise location.
The government said the new system is intended to improve last-mile delivery, e-commerce, emergency response, financial services and public-service delivery by providing a common digital reference for locations.
The postcode is structured through five levels — state, local government area, district, area and building — and is linked to the property rather than its occupant.
For businesses, the infrastructure could provide a standard location reference for customer verification, logistics and online commerce. Technology companies and organisations can also integrate postcode data into their digital platforms through NIPOST's available services.
The Federal Government is encouraging Nigerians, businesses and organisations to find, save and begin using their digital postcodes, marking another step in Nigeria's development of digital public infrastructure.
