ACCRA, Ghana — Ghana’s Parliament is scheduled to reconvene on Tuesday, September 29, for an extraordinary sitting after a petition from Minority MPs called for parliamentary scrutiny of major narcotics seizures involving consignments linked to the country.
Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin summoned lawmakers to the chamber at noon, invoking Article 112(3) of the 1992 Constitution and Parliament’s Standing Orders. The notice did not outline the specific business to be considered.
The petition followed the seizure of nearly 3.9 tonnes of cocaine by French authorities at the Port of Dunkirk on September 10, from a container reportedly departing Ghana. Minority MPs have called for questions to be examined around port security, customs controls, intelligence gathering and the agencies responsible for tackling narcotics trafficking.
The Majority has questioned the need for the recall, saying the government has already initiated measures to investigate the seizures. The sitting brings the issue before Parliament for further discussion and scrutiny.
