Gabon has taken another step toward next-generation mobile connectivity after Airtel Gabon and Chinese technology company ZTE announced a new network technology deployment.
Announced on October 13, the project uses a technology called FDD+TDD Massive MIMO, which combines different radio-frequency bands to improve how mobile networks use available spectrum and handle growing data traffic.
According to the companies, the technology has been deployed on Airtel Gabon’s live network. Their reported measurements showed a 107% improvement in user throughput, a 20% increase in site-level traffic capacity and a 41% improvement in radio-resource utilisation efficiency compared with the previous configuration.
The upgrade is designed to help the operator accommodate rising demand for mobile internet, digital financial services, online education, cloud applications and other data-intensive services. It also provides a potential pathway for further network development as Gabon prepares for future 5G services.
The announcement comes as Gabon expands its digital infrastructure and seeks to modernise public services and business connectivity. Better network performance could benefit consumers and companies that depend on reliable mobile internet, although actual user experiences will vary according to location, network coverage and device capabilities.
The deployment does not mean that nationwide 5G service has already launched. Instead, it represents an upgrade to existing network infrastructure intended to improve capacity and support future technological development.
The next test will be how widely operators extend these improvements and whether subscribers experience more reliable connections and better performance as demand for digital services continues to grow.
