Liberia has been shaken by a major legal development after authorities charged former Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor in connection with an investigation into an alleged transnational narcotics network.

According to authorities, Taylor faces charges including drug trafficking, money laundering, unlicensed importation of controlled substances, criminal solicitation and conspiracy. She was reportedly detained at Roberts International Airport while attempting to leave the country.

The case has attracted significant national attention because Taylor served as Liberia’s vice president from 2018 to 2024 and remains a prominent figure in the country’s political landscape.

Authorities have also charged three foreign nationals in absentia and are seeking their arrest as the investigation continues. The government has said the case will be handled through the justice system without political interference.

The development follows Liberia’s recent seizure of a large cocaine shipment linked to international trafficking networks. Officials have stressed that the separate investigations should not automatically be treated as connected.

Taylor has been charged, but the allegations have not been proven in court. The investigation and subsequent legal proceedings are expected to remain a major focus of public and political attention in Liberia.
