Tensions between Eritrea and Ethiopia have entered a dangerous new phase after witnesses reportedly saw Eritrean soldiers moving through Adigrat in Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region.
Reuters reported that at least two residents saw dozens of soldiers in military vehicles on October 7, identifying them by their uniforms. The reports could not be independently verified. Eritrea’s Information Minister Yemane Meskel rejected the narrative surrounding the alleged deployment, accusing Ethiopia of creating a justification for further conflict.
The reports come only days after Eritrea severed diplomatic ties with Ethiopia. The diplomatic rupture followed Ethiopia’s decision to close its embassy in Asmara and expel 10 Eritrean diplomats, while Ethiopia has accused Eritrea of supporting armed opposition forces — an allegation Eritrea denies.
The situation has raised fears that renewed fighting in northern Ethiopia could develop into a broader regional crisis. The African Union has previously urged the countries involved to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could further destabilize the Horn of Africa.
With diplomatic relations already severed, the latest reports from Tigray are intensifying international concern over the direction of Eritrea–Ethiopia relations.
