LUSAKA — Zambia has announced the expansion of its national digital identity programme, marking a significant step in the country's efforts to modernise public administration and improve digital access to government services.

The initiative is designed to strengthen secure identity verification, simplify access to public services, reduce administrative delays, and improve coordination between government agencies through integrated digital systems.

Government officials say digital identity infrastructure is becoming a cornerstone of Zambia’s long-term digital transformation strategy. The expanded programme is expected to improve efficiency in healthcare, education, financial services, taxation, and social protection while strengthening cybersecurity and protecting citizen data.

Technology specialists note that trusted digital identity systems can support financial inclusion, expand online government services, and encourage wider adoption of digital platforms by businesses and citizens.

Authorities also plan to work with financial institutions, telecommunications providers, and technology partners to ensure secure implementation while expanding digital literacy programmes nationwide.
