LOMÉ — Togo has taken a significant step toward strengthening its scientific and biotechnology capabilities after the Council of Ministers approved a bill authorising the country to accede to the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB).

The decision, adopted on August 5, 2026, is expected to deepen Togo’s cooperation with an international network focused on biotechnology research, scientific training, and technological innovation.

The move could create new opportunities for Togolese researchers, universities, laboratories, and biotechnology professionals. Membership would provide a stronger framework for scientific cooperation and could support research and knowledge exchange in areas where biotechnology has growing applications.

The development comes as African countries increasingly seek to expand domestic scientific capacity and reduce dependence on imported technical expertise.

Government support for international research partnerships could also encourage young scientists to pursue careers in biotechnology, life sciences, laboratory research, and related technology fields.

Togo’s proposed accession marks a new step in the country’s efforts to strengthen scientific diplomacy and position biotechnology as part of its broader innovation and development agenda.
