PRAIA — Cabo Verde has activated a nationwide emergency preparedness plan ahead of the annual rainy season, with the National Civil Protection and Fire Service placing emergency teams on heightened readiness across the archipelago.

Authorities have instructed municipalities to update emergency response plans, identify communities in flood- and landslide-prone areas, inspect drainage infrastructure, and prepare temporary accommodation centres for residents who may need evacuation if severe weather occurs.

Emergency management experts say early preparation is one of the most effective ways to reduce disaster risks. By coordinating national and local response agencies before heavy rainfall begins, officials aim to improve response times, protect vulnerable communities, and minimise damage to public infrastructure.

The preparedness campaign also includes public awareness activities encouraging residents to avoid high-risk zones, report hazards promptly, and follow official weather and emergency advisories throughout the rainy season.

Government officials emphasised that coordination between municipal authorities, emergency responders, and local communities will remain essential as weather conditions are monitored in the coming weeks.
