GABORONE — Botswana has joined South Africa and Zimbabwe in a joint bid to host the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations, creating a major opportunity for Southern Africa to stage one of Africa’s biggest sporting events.

The bid was confirmed by COSAFA President and Botswana Football Association President Tariq Babitseng, who said the three countries are working together on the hosting proposal.

The proposed bid could bring significant attention to Botswana’s football infrastructure and tourism sector. Botswana is continuing to improve stadium facilities, while South Africa offers extensive experience and established infrastructure for major international tournaments.

Zimbabwe is also undertaking stadium refurbishment as part of the regional hosting ambitions.

If successful, the joint bid could generate major opportunities for tourism, hospitality, transport, construction and sports-related businesses across the three countries.

The proposal also represents a major push to bring AFCON back to Southern Africa and strengthen regional cooperation through sport.

The bid now enters an important phase as the countries work to align their hosting plans and meet CAF requirements.
