ALGIERS — Algeria is facing a major national tragedy after a fire at the Mohammadia Childhood Relief Institution near the capital killed 11 people, including children, and injured 19 others.

Emergency services responded to the blaze and evacuated survivors from the facility. Several of the injured reportedly suffered burns, while emergency teams also safely evacuated people with disabilities from the institution.

The tragedy has prompted an urgent response from Algerian authorities and widespread national mourning. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune expressed condolences to the victims’ families as officials began addressing the aftermath of the disaster.
