Zimbabwe is exploring cooperation with Google in artificial intelligence, digital skills development and technology entrepreneurship, as the government looks to accelerate the country’s digital transformation.
The discussions took place during a meeting between President Emmerson Mnangagwa and Google Vice President James Manyika in New York, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. Information and Communication Technology Minister Tatenda Mavetera also took part.
According to the minister, the talks covered opportunities to strengthen Zimbabwe’s digital landscape, including training and capacity-building initiatives. The government is seeking to benefit from Google programmes that include 100,000 scholarships and AI training, the report said.
The discussions also included the possibility of cooperation around a technology park. No final agreement or implementation timetable was announced in the report.
If developed, the proposed collaboration could create new pathways for Zimbabweans to build digital skills and explore technology-focused businesses. Further details would be needed to establish the programme’s scope, eligibility and rollout schedule.
