Kenya’s opposition landscape is entering a new phase after former President Uhuru Kenyatta resigned as chairman of the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Coalition Council, opening the way for a leadership reshuffle ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Uhuru formally communicated his resignation in a letter dated October 5, saying it was time to create space for a new generation of leaders. He stressed, however, that stepping down from the leadership position did not mean abandoning the coalition.

The development comes as Azimio undergoes a wider political reorganisation and has been rebranded as the Ukombozi Alliance. Opposition leaders are now considering how to strengthen the alliance and select influential figures for the next phase of the 2027 political contest.

Reports indicate that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Siaya Governor James Orengo have emerged among names being considered in the coalition’s leadership discussions, with Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka involved in the ongoing consultations.

Uhuru said he would remain a committed member of the coalition and remain available to provide advice when required.

His decision could mark an important transition in Kenya’s opposition politics as established leaders make way for new leadership structures ahead of the 2027 election.
